The cult of Sisi
Subject
banners and posters
Description
These are some of the examples of posters and banners seen around the streets of Cairo in the weeks and months following the removal of the Muslim Brotherhood president Mohamed Morsi on 3 July 2013.
A cult of Abdel-Fatah El-Sisi emerged during this period, particularly in the wake of his call for Egyptians to give him 'a mandate' to fight 'terrorism' (referring to the Muslim Brotherhood) on 23 July 2013.

The image above shows Abdel-Fatah El-Sisi in his army uniform alongside former presidents Gamal Abdel-Nasser and Anwar El-Sadat. Nasser is probably the most popular Egyptian president, associated in popular memory with a 'golden age' when Egypt was the leader of the Arab World. Sadat is known as the 'hero of the crossing', referring to the Egyptian army's successful crossing of the Suez Canal and destruction of Israeli defences in the 1973 war.
