Graffiti image of Jika
Subject
Graffiti/Street Art
Description
This graffiti image is a tribute to Gaber Salah (aka Jika), who was the first martyr to fall during the term of former Muslim Brotherhood president Mohammed Morsi.
Jika was shot dead on 20 November 2012 when he was taking part in the first anniversary of the Mohammed Mahmoud Street protests. The image was painted shortly after Jika's death by street artists during protests at the Ittihadiyya Presidential Palace in November-December 2012. We also see the phrases 'No to Morsi' and 'No to the MB Constitution' repeatedly written around Jika's image.
In the wake of the 25 January 2011 Revolution, street art and graffiti flourished in Egypt. It played an important role in documenting different phases of the revolution and in commemorating the various victims of the violence perpetrated by different regimes against protesters, who were called 'martyrs' by supporters of the revolution. Public commemoration of the 'martyrs' of the revolution through graffiti as well as songs also aimed to remind Egyptians of the sacrifices made for the revolution and why they should, therefore, continue to support it.
