Title
"International Monetary Fund" by Yasser Elmanawehly
أغنية "صندوقه" لياسر المناوهلي
Subject
Satirical song
Description
This song mocks state propaganda in portraying the IMF as the saviour of Egyptians from poverty and need. As the Egyptian state justifies the large loans received from the IMF in terms of advancing the economic situation of the poor, the singer here turns this idea on its head by mocking these claims and showing how the large loans actually make the poor suffer even more.
Yasser Elmanawehly is a singer-songwriter-musician who began publishing his songs with the spark of the 2011 revolution. His songs became popular as they expressed the hopes and dreams of the revolution. His use of language and expressions associated with Egyptian village life also made his music unique.
