Description
This award-winning documentary, aired internationally in 2014, tracks several musicians from Egypt's underground heavy metal scene, including the sons of opposition politician Ayman Nour and the members of the country's first female metal band. Footage was filmed from the years before the revolution through 2012, covering the lead-up to the 2011 revolution, the first 18 days of mass protests and the first 18 months following the resignation of former president, the late Hosni Mubarak.
The film sheds some light on the challenges facing heavy metal musicians in Egypt. It also shows the different attitudes amongst musicians towards the revolution. Overall, it aims to break down assumptions and dismantle binary frameworks through which Westerners often view Muslims and Islam.
