Title
'No To Sexual Harassment' song
Subject
song
Description
Sadat and Fifty are very successful mahragan musicians. This song is encouraging men not to sexually harass women. In 2013, there was a high incidence of mass sexual assault directed against female protesters. Moreover, a 2013 study by UN Women, found that 99.3 percent of Egyptian women and girls in a survey said they had been the victims of some kind of sexual harassment, from unwanted advances to rape.
The song was used in the short film, 'Creepers on the Bridge', which shows what it's like for a woman to walk down a busy Cairo street. However, the song reproduces some problematic assumptions about sexual harassment and gender relations. It draws on tropes of proper manliness (real men protect women and do not grope them). Moreover, it draws a distinction between physical harassment (bad) and verbal harassment (OK).

I’m not lying, I’m telling the truth
I may cat-call, but I don’t grope
The name of our campaign is
Protect her, instead of groping her
I’m not lying, I’m telling the truth
I may cat-call, but I don’t grope
This is an important point
Manliness is about intentions
So what if we live in safety
And girls can walk everywhere?
So come on now and think
If every young man was considerate
And to stand up to groping/harassment
Live by the slogan
‘I don’t grope, protecting girls is a duty’
Correct your manliness and say
‘I’ll walk on the straight and narrow’
Even cat-calling I won’t do
Every word is a negative
Who’s to blame
If our girls are walking around scared?
We have to wake up, guys
Aren’t you Egyptian, or what?
Of course you’re wrong
If you say it’s about how she’s dressed
It’s your duty to protect her
And not to blame her
Stand beside me now and say
‘from now on, I’ll protect her’
The name of our campaign is
Protect her, instead of groping her
I don’t want to upset anyone
All I mean to say is
Respect the girl a bit
I may cat-call, but I don’t grope
